The South Knox Spartans may have been the visitors on the schedule Tuesday night, but they certainly looked right at home. With the Blue Chip Conference matchup against Rivet moved to the Spartan pitch because of the heat and the Patriots’ lack of lights, South Knox took full advantage of the familiar surroundings, jumping on Rivet early and never looking back in a convincing 4-1 victory. The Spartans wasted little time putting their stamp on the match. Less than two minutes in, Tucker Mahan delivered a perfectly placed corner kick into the box, where Levi Loudermilk rose above the defense for a free header and a 1-0 South Knox lead. Loudermilk nearly doubled the advantage moments later, but the Patriots' keeper came up with a terrific diving save to keep his side in the contest.. It didn’t last long. In the 10th minute, Blake Sutton sent a cross sailing in from the right. Loudermilk got on the other end of it after it bounced, getting his head to the ball and directing it over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. The Spartans kept the pressure coming. Less than 60 seconds later, Mahan found Jakob Graman, whose shot narrowly missed the target. Then, in the 12th minute, Boone Foster pounced on a rebound and buried his shot in off the post to push the advantage to 3-0. South Knox wasn’t finished. With 14 mins left in the half, a Rivet defender attempted to clear the ball, only to have it ricochet off Collin Ellerman. Ellerman quickly settled the loose ball and blasted it into an empty net, giving the Spartans a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the break. From there, South Knox shifted from attack mode to managing the match. Mac Harmon made three saves in goal, and the Spartan defense kept the Patriots from generating much offense until the final moments. With the outcome firmly in hand, the South Knox bench took over for the majority of the second half. Rivet finally broke through with just 43 seconds remaining, scoring a consolation goal to spoil the shutout and make the final 4-1 Coach's comments: “We came out with good energy and purpose tonight, and I thought we did a nice job of taking advantage of our opportunities in the first half. That’s something we’ve been looking for. It was really pleasing to get the bench out there for most of the second half. Those guys put in a lot of work every day, and they deserve the chance to get varsity minutes. It was especially good to see some of our younger players get a run and gain that experience.” The victory improves the Spartans' season record to 2-1-2 overall and 1-1 in Blue Chip play, giving South Knox a confidence-boosting result as they look to build on their rhythm. The Spartans are right back at it Wednesday night, making the trek to Mt. Vernon for a matchup with the Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
