The South Knox Spartans kept their sights firmly set on the target Wednesday night. Playing under the lights on their home pitch, the Spartans put together a balanced offensive performance, hitting the bullseye three times in the opening half before doing so twice more after intermission in a convincing 5-0 victory over Sullivan. Kane Simmons nearly opened the scoring in the game’s first five minutes, ripping a shot off the post before the rebound was somehow kept out by the Golden Arrows' keeper. Moments later, Owen Keyes found Simmons with a beautifully angled ball, but Simmons’ attempt slid just wide. The breakthrough came in the 9th minute as Keyes threaded a pass into the path of Levi Loudermilk, who calmly finished past the keeper to put South Knox ahead 1-0. Loudermilk nearly doubled the advantage a minute later when Keyes delivered a corner into the box, but his header was cleared off the goal line. The Spartans wouldn’t be denied for much longer; with 21:26 on the clock, Kain Ellerman slipped a through ball to Loudermilk, who finished the opportunity for his second goal of the night and a 2-0 lead for the home side. South Knox found its third goal with 11:02 remaining in the half. Simmons’ shot was saved, but Ellerman was in the right place at the right time to clean up the rebound and send the Spartans into halftime with a 3-0 advantage. If Sullivan hoped to mount a comeback after the break, South Knox quickly extinguished that thought. Just 90 seconds after the restart, Jakob Graman delivered a corner kick into the box, and Ellerman hammered a left-footed volley into the upper-left corner for his second goal of the night, pushing the lead to 4-0. Loudermilk nearly added an assist when he found Graman in front of goal, but the Arrows' keeper tipped Graman’s attempt over the bar. The Spartans’ fifth and final goal came with 20:20 remaining. Graman’s free kick was parried by the keeper, but Collin Ellerman was there to bury the rebound home and cap the scoring at 5-0. Mac Harmon finished with two saves as South Knox’s defense kept Sullivan off the scoreboard. Coach's comments: “We came out much more focused tonight and controlled the game from the start. The guys moved the ball well, created a lot of chances, and - most importantly - finished some of them. It was a really balanced performance - Levi had two goals, Kain had two, Collin had one, and we had a lot of guys involved in creating those opportunities. That’s what we want to see at this point in the season." The victory gets South Knox back on track and improves their record to 7-2-2 (3-2 in Blue Chip) heading into their Watermelon Cup showdown against Lincoln this Saturday night at 7:00pm.
