Friday night had everything you want from a Senior Night at the Spartan pitch — the lights were on, the crowd was pumped, and South Knox walked away with another Blue Chip Conference victory. The Spartans defeated Wood Memorial 3-1 under lights, putting together a stronger second-half performance to close out a memorable night for South Knox’s seniors. The home side nearly opened the scoring ten minutes into the match after Owen Keyes sent a ball across to Kain Ellerman, who pushed his attempt just wide. Boone Foster had another good look with 17:20 left, but his shot also sailed just wide of the mark. Then, with the first half literally down to its final second, the Spartans managed to break through. Collin Ellerman ripped a shot from outside the box that the Trojan goalkeeper couldn’t handle. The ball spilled loose and Levi Loudermilk pounced on the rebound, hammering the ball into the net right before the siren sounded. South Knox carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime. Just over four minutes into the second half, Tucker Mahan sent a perfect ball across the face of goal, past the keeper, where Foster was waiting for the simplest of tap-ins to make it 2-0. Jakob Graman narrowly missed adding another midway through the half as the Spartans continued to apply pressure. With 17:50 remaining, Loudermilk created some room and unleashed a left-footed shot that found the back of the net, pushing the South Knox advantage to 3-0. Wood Memorial answered with a consolation goal with 5:52 remaining, connecting on a through ball to cut the deficit to 3-1. That was as close as the Trojans would get. Mac Harmon finished with two saves, while the Spartan defense closed out the final minutes to preserve the victory. Coach's comments: “The first half was a little sloppy for us. We weren’t quite as sharp as we’d like to be, and there were some passes and decisions that could have been better. But we talked about it at halftime and I thought we were much better as the game went on. That first goal coming with less than a second left was huge because it gave us something to build on. More importantly, it was Senior Night, and that’s what made tonight special. These seniors have poured a lot of time and work into this program, and getting them a win in front of their families and teammates was important. You always want Senior Night to be something they remember, and I think tonight was a good night for them." South Knox improves to 9-3-2 on the season (4-2 in Blue Chip) and will battle North Knox at home on Tuesday at 5:00pm, giving the Spartans one more regular-season home match before their attention turns toward postseason play.
