The South Knox Spartans closed out the regular season the same way they opened it — with a win. And now they’ll get another shot at the North Knox Warriors. South Knox rolled to a 6-0 victory over their northern neighbors Tuesday night in the final regular-season home match, and the two teams will see each other again next week as they square off in the first round of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament. The Spartans wasted little time establishing control Tuesday, taking the lead just 90 seconds in after Jakob Graman slipped a well-placed through ball to Levi Loudermilk, who buried his shot into the net to put South Knox ahead 1-0. The home side doubled the advantage in the 17th minute as Kain Ellerman’s attempt was stopped by the North Knox goalkeeper, but Kane Simmons was there to clean up the rebound and make it 2-0. With 18 minutes left in the half, Graman unleashed a shot from distance that rattled off the crossbar. Loudermilk was in the right place at the right time, blasting the rebound home for his second goal of the night and a 3-0 Spartan lead. South Knox continued to apply pressure after halftime and it paid dividends in the 47th minute as Xander Reynolds found Loudermilk with a perfect cross from the right side, and Loudermilk made no mistake on the finish to complete his hat trick — his third of the season — and push the lead to 4-0. The Spartans nearly added another moments later when Loudermilk’s shot was saved and Kain Ellerman’s follow-up struck the post. Ellerman eventually got his goal with just under 20 minutes remaining, taking a pass from Loudermilk and slotting the ball in to make it 5-0. Graman then put the finishing touch on the night from the penalty spot after a North Knox foul in the box with about 10 minutes left, and the 6-0 margin held to the final whistle. South Knox goalkeeper Mac Harmon recorded four saves in the shutout and the Spartans finish the regular season with a record of 10-3-2 overall and 5-2 in the Blue Chip conference. Coach's comments: “We wanted to finish the regular season the right way, and I thought we did just that. We moved the ball reasonably well, created opportunities and were able to put some of those away. Our finishing needs to improve, but I thought we were a little more patient and connected better as the game went on. We talked about continuing to play our game, keep possession, and not get complacent just because we had a lead. The second half was solid, and it was good to get a clean sheet and finish up with a win. We’re going to enjoy this one tonight, but then it’s back to work because Monday is a completely different game.” The next chapter comes next Wednesday, October 7, when South Knox and North Knox meet again — this time in the opening round of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:00pm.
