If the South Knox Spartans were looking to make a statement during the Sectional tournament on Wednesday night, consider that statement made. The Spartans unleashed one of the most dominant offensive performances in program history, overwhelming North Knox 17-0 in the opening round of the IHSAA Class 1A Sectionals. And at the center of the offensive onslaught was junior forward Levi Loudermilk, who put together a night for the record books. Loudermilk tallied nine goals - setting a new South Knox record for goals scored in a single game - and the Spartans also established new team marks for most goals in a game (17), and most goals in a half (11). South Knox wasted little time, beginning their rampage less than three minutes in after Tucker Mahan slipped a through ball to Loudermilk, who calmly slotted it home for a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Blake Sutton delivered a free kick that Mahan hammered into the net to make it 2-0. From there, the floodgates opened further. Kane Simmons found Loudermilk for the third goal in the 14th minute, and Mahan connected with Loudermilk again in the 18th minute, allowing the latter to complete his hat trick. Just 30 seconds after the restart, Mahan turned provider once more, sending a cross to Kain Ellerman, who tapped it home for a 5-0 advantage. Ellerman was then fouled in the box a few minutes later, giving the Spartans a penalty kick. Jakob Graman made no mistake from the spot, blasting it into the net for goal number six. With 16:45 left in the half, Mahan crossed to Loudermilk, whose shot was saved, and Owen Keyes pounced on the rebound to make it 7-0. Christopher Duke then crossed to Mahan for the eighth goal, before Xander Reynolds found Loudermilk, who dribbled around defenders and buried another to put South Knox up 9-0 as the mercy rule knocked on the door. With 3:45 on the clock, Duke’s cross found Ellerman, who used a touch pass to set up Loudermilk for a blast into the corner and his fifth goal of the game. Just a minute later, Graman sent a long ball over the top of the defense and Loudermilk pushed it past the keeper for his sixth of the half, sending the Spartans into the break with an astonishing 11-0 lead. South Knox picked up right where they left off in the second half as Loudermilk clipped the crossbar just 20 seconds after the restart, before Sutton found the net from a Mahan corner in the 42nd minute. Mahan’s corner kick produced another goal less than three minutes later, this time finding Collin Ellerman, who slotted home for a 13-0 advantage. In the 50th minute, Mahan collected his sixth assist of the match as he fed Loudermilk for another goal. Sutton then served up a free kick to Loudermilk a few minutes later, and he hammered it home for goal number eight. With 25 minutes remaining, Keyes slipped a pass through the back line to Loudermilk, who maneuvered around the keeper and scored his record-breaking ninth goal of the night. Sutton capped the scoring via a long-distance strike with 23:00 on the clock, putting the Spartans up 17-0 and triggering the mercy rule a few minutes later, which ends the game twenty minutes early if a team is up by 9 or more goals. Keeper Mac Harmon wasn’t called upon to make a single save as South Knox's defense completely shut down the Warriors, allowing the Spartans to cruise into the next round. Coach's comments: "We came out with the right mentality and played the game the way we wanted to. The guys moved the ball well and continued to play hard. We wanted to stay focused and play our game. Obviously, Levi had an incredible night, but this was a complete team effort. The way we created chances and finished them was really impressive. It was important for us to take care of business tonight. We know the games get more difficult from here, and we have to be ready for that. We don’t want to get caught up in the score. We enjoyed the performance, but now the focus turns to tomorrow night.” With tonight's victory, South Knox improves to 11-3-2 on the season and advances to the Sectional semifinal on Thursday, where they will face Northeast Dubois at 7:00pm.
