Soccer (Boys V): Spartans' Season Ends in OT Heartbreak

By Boris Vanjicki | Oct 8, 2026 10:05 PM

South Knox saw its season come to a heartbreaking end Thursday night, falling 1-0 in overtime to Northeast Dubois in the Sectional semifinal. The Spartans battled for every inch, created numerous scoring opportunities, and pushed the Jeeps to the limit before a goal in the first overtime period proved to be the difference. The loss brings an end to a season in which South Knox finished with an 11-4-2 record, but the final score tonight hardly tells the story of a team that refused to go quietly. From the opening whistle, the Spartans looked capable of finding the breakthrough. Kain Ellerman nearly capitalized on a great through ball from Tucker Mahan in the 12th minute, only to see his shot turned away. Less than a minute later, Levi Loudermilk slipped a ball through to Mahan, whose attempt sailed just over the crossbar. Loudermilk continued to trouble the Northeast Dubois defense, forcing a terrific save in the 21st minute before testing the keeper again with a well-worked dribble and shot in the 27th. With just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Loudermilk and Ellerman each had attempts denied in quick succession. In the closing moments of the half, Ellerman forced another terrific save, with the Jeeps’ goalkeeper tipping his shot just wide. South Knox continued to possess the ball well in the second half, as Owen Keyes and Mahan both came close to breaking the deadlock with shots narrowly off target. Loudermilk tested the goalkeeper once more with 18 minutes remaining, while Blake Sutton’s free kick with 10 minutes left set up another opportunity for Loudermilk that drifted just wide. As regulation time expired, the scoreboard remained unchanged, and - with the two teams locked at 0-0 - the Sectional semifinal moved into overtime. With 4:20 remaining in the first overtime period, Northeast Dubois finally broke through, finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. South Knox refused to surrender. With just 25 seconds remaining in the period, Collin Ellerman fired a shot that was saved, as the Spartans threw players forward in search of an equalizer. In the second overtime, Loudermilk had one final opportunity to keep the season alive with just over 5 mins left, but his shot was once again turned away. The final whistle brought an end to the Spartans’ postseason run and a season filled with promise, hard work and moments worth remembering. Goalkeeper Mac Harmon was a brick wall between the sticks, finishing with eight saves and keeping South Knox within striking distance throughout the contest. But beyond the saves, the missed opportunities, and the final score, Thursday night’s loss was about something much bigger than soccer. The Spartans entered the season with aspirations of making a deep postseason run, but season-ending injuries to senior Joseph Ellerman and sophomore Reece Yoder proved to be significant blows. Losing two important pieces of the lineup for the remainder of the season forced the team to adjust, regroup and find a way forward. And on Thursday night, against a Northeast Dubois team that proved to be an exceptionally difficult opponent, South Knox left everything it had on the field. Coach's comments: "So close, yet so far. That’s the reality of soccer sometimes. There’s such a fine margin between these two teams, and tonight, unfortunately, it just didn’t fall our way. Losing Joseph and Reece for the season really hurt us, but our guys continued to battle and gave it everything they had. As coaches, that’s all we can ever ask. We couldn’t be prouder of the effort, the commitment and the way these boys fought for one another. "And then there’s the senior class. These guys are more than just players who have worn a South Knox jersey. They’re family. We’ve shared so many memories, so many battles, and so many moments that we’ll carry with us long after the final whistle. Watching their high school careers come to an end is tough because you know how much they’ve invested in this program and how much they mean to all of us. They’ll be sorely missed next season - not just for what they brought to the field, but for who they are as young men. We’re incredibly proud of them, and we’re grateful for everything they’ve given this team.” For seniors Joseph Ellerman, Boone Foster, Jakob Graman, Jack Herb, Tucker Mahan, and Blake Sutton, tonight marked the end of their high school playing careers. The ending wasn’t what the Spartans wanted. It wasn’t what they had worked for, and it certainly wasn’t what they believed was possible. But seasons are not measured solely by how they end. They are measured by the work put in, the adversity overcome, the friendships formed, and the character revealed when things don’t go according to plan. This group experienced all of it. At 11-4-2, South Knox closes the book on another competitive season. Yet when the sting fades, what remains will be a group of players who stood together, fought together, and represented their school with pride. The season may be over, but the memories, the friendships, and the legacy of these Spartans will last much longer.
