Lady Spartans Win Sectional Title! The South Knox Lady Spartans faced the Pike Central Chargers on Saturday in the sectional championship match. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season, setting the stage for another tightly contested battle. The game started quickly, with both teams creating attacking opportunities. The Spartans controlled the majority of possession, with their forwards doing a good job of holding the ball and building attacks. However, the Charger defense held strong and kept the Spartans off the scoreboard through the first half. Pike Central created a couple of half-chances of its own, but the Spartan defense executed the game plan and denied the Chargers any clear opportunities. The second half brought even more intensity as both teams came out of the break ready to battle. The Spartans continued to push forward and generate the majority of the chances. About halfway through the half, a Pike Central attacker broke through the initial pressure and found space behind the Spartan defense. Goalkeeper Layla Thomas came up huge with a save at her near post to keep the match scoreless. The Spartans responded by regaining control and continuing to attack. With around 15 minutes remaining, South Knox earned a corner kick. Kadee Jeffris delivered a dangerous ball into the box, and Azaria Easley’s header sailed just wide of the goal. The Spartans knew they were close and continued to apply pressure. With just seven minutes remaining, the breakthrough finally came. Kalissa Lavely sent a cross into the box, where Khloe Minderman finished with a perfectly placed ball over the Charger goalkeeper to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead! The final seven minutes were chaotic as Pike Central pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, the Spartan back line held strong, denying the Chargers’ late efforts and securing the 1-0 victory. With the win, the Lady Spartans captured their first sectional championship since 2023! Coaches’ Notes: “We came ready to play and executed the game plan. We were patient and trusted our game. We continued to attack and knew we just had to keep getting the chances and take advantage of them when we got them. It was a total team effort overall, but the clean sheet was extremely important. Layla Thomas was great in goal, and our back line did a great job all game long.” The Lady Spartans will host White River Valley this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of regional play as they look to keep their postseason run going!
