Boys' Varsity Soccer: Spartans and Eagles Stalemate as Lightning Strikes Out Contest

By Boris Vanjicki | Aug 20, 2025 8:56 PM

South Knox made the trek back to Evansville yesterday evening and wasted no time trying to soar ahead just 70 seconds in. Jakob Graman sent in a perfectly-feathered cross from the right, landing right at Ross Holscher’s feet in the middle. Holscher’s strike looked destined for the back of the net, but the Eagles’ keeper spread his wings and swatted the ball away. From there, most of the first half was a midfield tug-of-war, with the ball spending more time migrating between the two 18-yard lines. In what was quite a cagey affair, chances were few and far between. But, in the 34th minute, Evansville Christian swooped in to grab the opener, securing a 1–0 lead at halftime. The Spartans reshuffled their formation after the break and began to take command. Their persistence finally hatched a chance in the 49th minute as Malaki Downen ran rings around a couple of defenders, before slipping a silky pass to Levi Loudermilk, who kept his composure and calmly tucked a shot into the bottom left corner to ruffle the home side's feathers and level the scores at 1-1. With momentum on their side, South Knox kept pecking away in search of a winner. But, just as they looked ready to take flight again, lightning drew closer, and the officials decided to ground the match early — leaving both sides to settle for a 1–1 scoreline that ended not with a final whistle, but with nature calling fowl. Perched between the posts, keeper Blake Sutton had six saves for the Spartans, who are now 0-1-1 on the season. Coach's comments: "We showed good resilience after going down a goal. I was proud of the way the team adjusted at halftime and took control in the second half. All that's missing is putting two solid halves together, over the full 80 mins. It’s unfortunate the weather brought things to an early end, but our performance showed a lot of positives that we can continue to build on moving forward." Next up: South Knox travels to Princeton on Thursday, August 21, to tackle the Tigers in a match kicking off at 6pm EST.
