Boys' Varsity Soccer: Spartans Scratch Out 1-1 Draw Against Tigers

South Knox traveled into Tiger territory Thursday night and controlled much of the contest, but had to settle for a 1–1 draw with Princeton, who managed to claw their way back into the game late. The Spartans wasted no time sinking their teeth in - just three minutes in, Tucker Mahan threaded a pass to Kaiden Grumieaux, who prowled across the 18-yard box before firing a low shot in off the left post for a 1–0 lead. Two minutes later, the visitors nearly doubled their advantage when Jakob Graman’s strike forced a sharp save from the keeper. In the 12th minute, Malaki Downen teed up Ross Holscher, whose effort only managed to bounce off the crossbar, leaving the Tigers with their stripes still intact. The Spartans roared out of the halftime gate with more chances. Downen blasted just over within seconds of the restart, and in the 51st minute, a slick one-two between Downen and Holscher saw the Princeton keeper leap into action once more, parrying the ball away at the near post. With 15 minutes left, a failed clearance led to a scramble in the box, and the Tigers pounced on the loose ball to level the scores. South Knox pressed hard for a winner; in the 75th minute, a flowing move from Levi Loudermilk to Mahan produced a dangerous cross that Holscher just missed connecting with. A final push with three minutes remaining saw Holscher set up Downen, but his shot blazed agonizingly over the bar to leave the match deadlocked. In goal for the Spartans, Blake Sutton kept his side steady, finishing with seven saves. South Knox moves to 0-1-2 on the season. Coach's comments: "We created enough chances to put the game away early, but just couldn't execute. A little frustrating on our part but credit to Princeton, they hung around and made us pay for one mistake. Our effort is there, but the results are lagging behind a little. I thought Joseph Ellerman was strong for us in the back and Kaiden Grumieaux was his usual solid self in midfield." Next up: The Spartans kick off their home opener on Saturday, August 23, when they host Northeast Dubois in what will also be their first Blue Chip Conference battle of the season.
