South Knox was back in action tonight, taking on the Mt. Vernon Wildcats in a non-conference matchup. The Spartans started a little flat, conceding a goal just three minutes in on a strike from outside the box. A minute later, a handball in the box gave the Wildcats a chance to double their lead from the penalty spot, but keeper Layla Thomas came up big with a fantastic diving save to keep it 1-0. The rest of the first half was tightly contested. Both teams battled physically, but scoring chances were limited, and the halftime whistle came with the Wildcats still ahead 1-0. The break seemed to spark the Spartans. They came out with renewed energy and were rewarded 11 minutes into the second half. A clearance from Keelie Brown set up Cala Charleston, who struck a beautiful shot over the keeper to bring the game level at 1-1. With the score tied, both teams fought hard for the go-ahead goal. Mt. Vernon eventually broke through to retake the lead, then added two more goals late—one off a rebound following another brilliant save from Thomas, and another on a back-post tap-in from a cross. Despite the final 4-1 score, the Spartans created several dangerous opportunities, though the Wildcats’ well-executed offside trap made them difficult to convert. South Knox now sits at 3-2 overall (2-0 in Blue Chip Conference play) and will look to bounce back this Saturday, September 6th, at 11 a.m. when they host Washington Catholic.
