Boys' Varsity Soccer: Spartans Down Patriots 2-1 in Seniors' Last Stand

South Knox wrapped up their home slate in winning fashion, toppling Rivet 2-1 in a Blue Chip Conference clash that marked the final game on the Spartan pitch for the senior class. The home side wasted no time making their presence felt, earning a penalty just six minutes in after Levi Loudermilk was brought down in the box. Ross Holscher stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give South Knox the early 1-0 lead. Despite creating several more golden opportunities, the Spartans were denied by a string of strong saves from the Patriots' goalkeeper. The second half continued in the same fashion, with South Knox dictating the tempo and Rivet refusing to wave the white flag. With 14:20 left to play, Jakob Graman slid a pass into Collin Ellerman’s path, and the freshman sent the ball into the right side of the net to double the advantage. The Patriots made things interesting by pulling one back with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Spartans held down the fort for the remainder of the match to claim the 2-1 decision. Goalkeeper Blake Sutton recorded two saves as South Knox improved to 9-4-2 on the season. Coach's comments: "We created a lot of chances and probably could have put the game away earlier, but credit to Rivet's keeper for some clutch saves. We kept our composure after they scored late and finished the job. More importantly, this was the last time our seniors set foot on this field, and it meant a lot to the entire team to make sure they walked off with a win. They’ve given so much to this program, and tonight was a fitting way to close out their careers on their home turf." Up next: South Knox closes out the regular season on Tuesday, September 30, with a road test against North Knox in another conference battle. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.
